John Zink Company’s Landfill Flare Technology Recognized by South Coast Air Quality Management District

TULSA, Okla., March 31, 2008 – The South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) has determined that John Zink Company’s patented Zink Ultra Low Emission (ZULEÔ) flare meets the Best Available Control Technology (BACT) requirements satisfying Lowest Achievable Emissions Reduction (LAER). To date, John Zink’s ZULE flare is the only proven technology that can meet SCAQMD emission requirements for biogas applications.

ZULE flare stacks range in size from 4’ x 40’ to as large as 13’ x 60’. The 13’ x 60’ flare stack is 6000 SCFM and does not exceed NOx levels of 0.025 lb/MMBtu or 19.91 tons per year, compared to standard enclosed flares which yield .06 lb/MMBtu or 47.78 tons per year.

The ZULE flare system is a forced premix design; air is mixed in before it enters the landfill flare. All ZULE flare systems include anti-flashback burners with an internal flame arresting seal, a flame stabilization device and no adjustable or moving parts.

Several landfills and digester gas facilities in California are installing ultra-low-emission flares, and more are in process. Landfills outside of southern California are not currently required to install the technology, but they do so in order to be better neighbors as well as to lower NOx and CO emissions at their facilities.

All of the installed ZULE flares that have been tested have surpassed customer performance expectations. All sites have reported NOx levels less than 0.02 lb/MMBtu, CO levels less than 0.06 lb/MMBtu, and NMOC destruction greater than 99.9%. In many tests the NOx levels have been as low as 3-4 ppm.
