R&D Furnaces


To continue development of leading-edge burner designs that meet and exceed emissions requirements, Zink dedicated two furnaces and one wind tunnel exclusively for research and development testing.

Research Furnaces

The research furnaces, dubbed RF1 and RF2, provide our engineers with more flexibility, control and data acquisition capabilities than the customer demonstration furnaces. Specifically, The RF1 is an up-fired unit, capable of firing up to 3 MMBtu/hr. The unit is equipped with more than 100 thermocouples and a state-of-the-art data acquisition system. Also, all four walls of the RF1 furnace are lined with cooling tubes for controlled, combination cooling of one or more walls by air, water or an air/water mist.

The RF2 furnace, also called the microfurnace, provides up-to-the-minute control and data sampling. The L-shaped design allows for horizontal or vertical firing of a variety of standard and exotic fuels, such as carbon monoxide and acetylene. RF2's firing capacity of 200,000 Btu/hr provides research engineers with the flexibility to safely, extensively and accurately test ideas on a small scale. Zink tests multiple fuel compositions in the microfurnace to determine the key fuel parameters of customers' applications.

Wind Tunnel

Zink engineering experts use a wind tunnel to measure pressure drop in the burner, to properly size the burner and to measure the velocities inside the chamber. Wind tunnel measurements are analyzed and then compared to CFD models for further study. The cold gas-flow wind tunnel uses compressed air to simulate fuel flow through the burners placed in the bottom of the unit. The tunnel can be set to simulate a forced- or natural-draft system.
